I've never been a fan of cowboy movies or the Wild West. I had no idea who Gene Autry was. I had very low expectations for this museum. It turned out to be an amazing experience for my whole family. We took a tour with a fantastic, knowledgeable guide, which highlighted the complex (generally racist) relationship the American West had with Native Americans. The museum includes world class art and there was even a section devoted to protests of the Dakota pipeline! How cool is it that a major Museum has an exhibit on a current political issue?

One of the best museums in the US. The text panels show how carefully-researched each exhibition is. There is a lot of variety in the artifacts on display. The facility is well-designed, accessible, spacious and clean. The staff is knowledgable and friendly. The perspective here is inclusive and respectful to the many points of view of various players in the creation of the idea and reality of the “American West.” The exhibitions do not shy away from tough topics. And the graphics and displays help teach more than just basic cowboy history; details on the economics of being a cowboy and what their daily life on the trail was like are included. This is an outstanding place to visit that gives a great introduction to the unique culture of California. Do not pass up a chance to visit! This is a great place to take your family or just visit on your own. Entry prices are reasonable but there are many special discounts to take advantage of. We went on the 2nd Tuesday of the month and it was free admission! No charge for parking. Rental bike station at the entrance. And no charge for temporary or special exhibitions.

A gem of a museum. They have wonderful summer fairs. This is a special place. Free parking - right across the street from the zoo. There revolving exhibits tend to be very interesting playful and offers a unique perspective. I loved their exhibition on play as the miniature hand woven baskets. There were some you needed a magnifying glass to see. They were so delicate and beautiful. I do miss the Lisa See exhibit. I wish they would bring that back.

The Play exhibition seem out of context for the museum, must be the gene influence or some motive to bring families in? I've seen better nostalgia toys and stuff in small towns across this beautiful state. This was really lacking, but they tried. The place is kinda like the twilight zone and so are some of the people working there. Can't wait for the r. Masters of the American West show. Just kidding!

Great museum with plenty for everyone. Came here to see their PST: LA/LA exhibit and it was touching and informative. Their Playtime exhibit was very nostalgic and great fun for kids as well. But really, their permanent collections are worth visiting on their own: they have beautiful paintings of the west, the history of different groups' movement to the west, western entertainers memorabilia, culture of Native Americans, native plants garden, and live music the day I was there---what more could you want?! If you have Bank of America you get free admission during the first weekend of the month as part of BoA's Museums on Us program.
